Kimberly Vanderveen, MD, MAS, FACS

Dr. Vanderveen is a Colorado native and graduate of Bear Creek High School in Lakewood, CO. She received her bachelor’s degree with honors from Muhlenberg College in Allentown, PA; medical degree from Northwestern University in Chicago, IL; and surgical residency training at UC-Davis in Sacramento, CA. During her residency, she also obtained a Master’s Degree (MAS) in Clinical Research and was actively involved in cancer research and education.  Dr. Vanderveen subsequently completed a fellowship in Endocrine Surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN.  She holds Board Certification in General Surgery. 

Dr. Vanderveen is an expert in both medical and surgical aspects of endocrine diseases, specializing in surgery for diseases of the thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal glands. She is adept at minimally invasive techniques and advanced imaging, including new “scarless” transoral techniques. Dr. Vanderveen is active in national organizations, including the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons, the Society of Surgical Oncology, the American Thyroid Association, and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. She is a coveted local and national speaker, and also provides consultations for medical practice development and biomedical device research and design. 

Dr. Vanderveen initially practiced in Albuquerque, NM, where she helped the Presbyterian Medical Group build one of the country’s first community thyroid and endocrine cancer programs. She returned to Denver in 2011 to be closer to her family. (You may recognize her brother-in-law, Chris Vanderveen, from his Emmy Award-winning reporting on 9News.) 

Dr. Vanderveen currently serves as the Chairman of Rose’s Surgical Quality Committee, Vice-Chairman of Surgery, and Medical Director of the Rose Thyroid and Parathyroid Center – one of the country’s first community multidisciplinary endocrine centers of excellence.  Dr. Vanderveen’s true joy is spending time with her three children and her husband (also a physician and Denver native). 

She is also known for her love of cowboy boots, which she often wears during surgery.


Andrew Hammond, FNP-C

Andrew Hammond is a Colorado native. After attending high school in Loveland, CO, he ventured to Fort Worth, Texas for a change of scenery and to attend nursing school, graduating from Texas Christian University with a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing in 2009. In 2016, Andrew moved back to Northern Colorado, where he obtained his Masters of Science in Nursing – Family Practice from Simmons University in 2018. 

Andrew has a strong background as an operating room nurse, where he excelled in ensuring the care of patients through their surgical experience. He has worked with specialty teams in sports medicine, orthopedics and cardiothoracic surgery. Such experiences lead him to pursue a higher level of education as a Nurse Practitioner. In February of 2019, Andrew took the opportunity to apply his surgical skills and the cerebral habits as a Nurse Practitioner to realm of Surgical Endocrinology at DCES. He facilitates patient care in both the office and hospital. 

Andrew enjoys Colorado living with his wife, Lauren and his daughter, Audrey. He also enjoys all around fitness, books about horses, and hammocks. 


Maryem Kianinejad, CF-NP

Maryem grew up in South Texas. She graduated in 2007 with an Associate’s degree in Nursing and in 2009 went on to pursue her bachelor’s degree in Nursing from the University of Texas at Brownsville. In 2012 she decided to move to Colorado to further pursue a higher education in nursing and in 2016 she completed her Master of Science in Nursing – Family Nurse Practitioner at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. 

Prior to becoming and Nurse Practitioner, Maryem’s 9 years of nursing experience included intensive care, home health and home hospice, pain management and outpatient pre- and postoperative care.  Since becoming a Family Nurse Practitioner, she previously provided primary care at Clinica Family Health Services and Rose Family Medicine.   She joined Denver Center for Endocrine Surgery in January 2019 and has expanded her specialty knowledge of the endocrine system and her procedural skills.  Maryem primarily evaluates and treats patients in the DCES clinic and performs pre- and postoperative procedures.

In her spare time, Maryem enjoys hiking, biking, cooking and gardening.
